ABOUT US
The Comic Book Club at UNT began in the Spring semester of 2024 with just a handful of enthusiastic members and without a whiff of a plan. Armed with little more than determination, UNT’s gruelingly slow photo printers, and a clunky, outdated laminator, we handprinted two ten-page staplebound ash-can comics (lovingly named “boo-boos”). But look at us now we’ve grown to over 30 hardworking and wonderful members. Now, we’re producing five comics per semester and have made the decision to invest in professional printing to match the quality of our print to the quality of our work.
As we continue to learn from local artists, freelancers, and comics enthusiasts, we’re getting closer to our dream of becoming full-time creators. That’s why your support means the world to us—purchasing this book helps make those dreams a reality, one page at a time. Thank you for being part of our journey! We’re learning every day and improving our craft, and we’re excited to share the stories we’ve worked so hard to create.
Our goal is simple: to keep growing as artists and creators until we’re the ones bringing you the stories that you know and love.
ABOUT OUR PROCESS
Here’s a peek at our process: Each semester, we gather to pitch story ideas and vote as a group to determine which five comics will be created.
From there, the creation process begins, with each member taking on a specific role to bring the comic to life. These celebrated roles for each step of the process include: scriptwriting, concept art, storyboarding, sketching, inking, coloring, background creation, and last but not least, typography.
Big-name studios have teams of 10+ taking 3-4 months to make a single issue of a comic! There are thousands of manhours going into the creation of comics from the script to print. It’s a lot of work—especially for full-time students—but our members are passionate, hard-working, and always up for the challenge. Together, we’re creating the kinds of comics that you’ll not only enjoy reading but that we’re proud to put our names on!
WANT TO BE A MEMBER?
We welcome all comic enthusiasts who have a passion for collaborative creation and a willingness to work hard to achieve their goals! Club membership is reserved for UNT students, but all community members are welcome to attend and participate in our lectures and activities. Members and participants are invited to contribute to making our semesterly comic compendium!
Please see our comic archive to browse our members' amazing creations! If you have any questions, concerns, or are ready to hear our meeting dates and location, please contact us via email (untcomicbookclub@gmail.com) or via Instagram DM (@untcomicbookclub).
WANT TO BE A CONTRIBUTOR/SPEAKER?
We’d be honored to have you! We’re an organization equipped to teach young artists the ins and outs of comic creation. If you have professional experience and are interested in our mission, we’d love to hear from you via email (untcomicbookclub@gmail.com). For a bit of insight into what we are looking for:
-Short lessons or presentations on specific comic making processes (inking, sketching etiquette, color theory, and lettering practices).
-How to get hired by a studio.
-A peek into the world of indie comics.
Alternatively, if you’re interested in contributing to our professional goals, please visit our kofi, or visit us at our next art market!
